However, Tahiti is more than just a beautiful destination. Tahiti allows for people to come from all over the globe to celebrate a honeymoon, vow renewal and even a destination wedding. It is an experience that many people don’t have an opportunity to have within their lifetime. Make it count. Getting married is the ultimate relationship milestone and requires the utmost celebration. The union of two separate hearts becoming one deserves the most unique ceremony, as no heart is the same as another. The island of Tahiti is part of the French Polynesia and in order to get married there, there are certain rules you must follow. A very common rule known by many of us is the fact that both the bride and the groom must be legal adults (thus, 18 years of age by the date of the ceremony), and can not be part of the same family line. The ceremony must also have both the bride and groom present on the date and be performed in front of witnesses that are also above 18 years of age. Since the island does reside within the borders of French Polynesia, the ceremony will be performed in French; however, the couple may bring a translator to the ceremony in order for the couple to understand exactly what is being said. The couple must also bring a valid identification that cannot expire 60 days prior to the wedding day and a birth certificate, that has to have a certified French translation for the marriage in Tahiti to be legally binding. Finally, the couple must write a letter to the Mayor of the commune that they wish to get married in and additionally fill out the “Foreign Weddings in French Polynesia” document to also be presented to the mayor. These documents must be sent at least 45 days before the wedding to insure proper filing. All these documents allow for you to start your lives together the second you both say “I do”. You can arrange a traditional Tahitian wedding ceremony. Although these traditional wedding events are most popular with people on their honeymoon or renewing their vows, the traditional wedding is a hard to miss experience. The ceremony begins with the bride receiving a relaxing oil massage by her own Tahitian “bridesmaid” that was given to her, while surrounded by a variety of traditional bouquet of flowers. While the bride is being treated, the groom is taken to a small islet on a Canoe where he is to be painted with traditional tattoos, and given a crown to wear during the reception. During the ceremony, the bride wears a traditional Tahitian wedding dress and flower headpiece to. Also, a Tahitian gives the bride and groom their own Tahitian names to be used, as well as a name for their first born child. Following the ceremony, the newly weds travel on a sunset cruise where they listen to romantic Tahitian music being sung to them. This ceremony can only be found on the islands of Tahitian and is unlike anything else in the world. Having a traditional wedding can be a truly life changing experience, especially if you have it in the right location. The islands of Tahiti are that location. They hold onto the ancient Tahitian tradition that gives your destination wedding a kick that other weddings just don't have.
